Haunted by a splintered past, Lady Ardgillan is my ghost of the many private estates throughout Ireland that were made public for everyone to enjoy. Lady Ardgillan yearns for acceptance, not only for herself but for those who serve her, the women and girls who come early and work long days. When they are gone, her tears fall amid a society that demands that she be nothing less than perfect.
I’m lucky to live close to Ardgillan Castle and Demesne in North County Dublin, a place of high ceilings and green hills. I made this piece while sitting on the lawns of Ardgillan, in response to immense personal changes.
